About the Book….

Tis the night before Christmas and all through the house is the presence of one wickedly hot cowboy who’s come to stay for the holiday. Fiona Logan is downright shocked to return to her childhood home and find that the tall blond stranger who came to her rescue on an icy road will be sleeping just across the hall from her bedroom. Talk about temptation . . .

Jud Dawson never believed the Lucky Penny Ranch would live up to its name until now. Fiona is gorgeous, smart, funny, and everything he thought he’d never find. Now all he has to do is convince her to stick around town instead of hightailing it back to Houston. But with wild weather, nosy neighbors, and a new baby in the family, getting her to admit that she’s falling in love might just take a Christmas miracle.

Kickin’ Up Dust (Operation Cowboy Book 1) by Em Petrova

Date of Publication: July 19, 2016

This Marine follows the rules. This cowgirl is all about breaking them.

Operation Cowboy, Book 1

After losing his best friend and CO, Matt, in combat, Brodie Bell didn’t think his spirits could sink any lower. He was wrong. One look at his and Matt’s storm-flattened hometown nearly levels him.

Los Vista needs a leader, and as Brodie takes the weight of the world on his shoulders, he comes up with a plan. Merge the two ranches left standing, pray for a good calving season…and keep his hands too busy to get busy with Matt’s sexy little sister.

Danica was in pigtails when Brodie and Matt went off chasing glory. Now she’s a woman with a broken heart, but if Matt knew of the depraved cravings Brodie ignites in her body, he’d haunt her from the grave.

As they work to mend miles of broken fences, Brodie fights to ignore Danica’s tiny cutoff shorts and mile-long legs—and to ignore the “weapon” that’s locked and loaded in his Levis. Because the last thing he wants is to dishonor his friend’s memory by ravishing the sweetest little cowgirl he’s ever laid eyes on.

Warning: Involves a sweet and sassy ranch girl who knows her way around a rope, and a Marine turned cowboy who’d like to tie her down and spank her until she begs for more.

KICKIN’ UP DUST by Em Petrova is an exciting new Military Western (Marines) series, “Operation Cowboy”.

Set in Los Vista, Texas, several Marines return home together from Afghanistan.  Only to find their hometown a total mess, ravished by a horrible tornado, that left little standing, except two ranches.  While, some returned home, one did not, Brodie Bell’s best friend  and CO, Matt Pope. Devastated, tormented by inner convicts, grief, survival guilt, PTSD, heartbroken, and  a sense of shame, these Marines find life has changed forever for them.

After being gone for five years, Brodie and his follow Marines return to find Los Vista, needs a leader, who better than Brodie. Danica Pope, Matt’s little sister, is no longer a little girl, but a sassy, sweet, sexy ranch girl.

Brodie comes up with a plan to merge the only two ranchs left standing, his and Danica’s parents ranchs.

Fast paced, romance filled, ranch girl and a Marine turned cowboy. Well written with well-developed, devastatingly sexy Marines, and one hot ranch girl. The characters are engaging and intriguing. I can’t wait to read more on the secondary characters and their lives.  The storyline is unique, while, not a fun loving, up-roaring romp of a story, it is a heart-warming, HOT, sexy read, with an underlying story of one Marine’s survival and inner turmoil, after returning home.

Powerful, compelling and emotional. It is also engaging, and entertaining. Read how Brodie and  Danica find their love blossoming, but can they keep their hands off each other and not dishonor Matt?  And can Matt lose the guilt over Matt’s death?

Fans of Military Western romance, Marines, fast reads, raunchy sex, will find “Kickin’ Up Dust” a fulfilling and satisfying read. I loved how Ms. Petrova brought so much to this story, she brings PTSD into the light, the devastation of the returning Marines, and the horrors they faced, to the forefront of  a yet romantic tale. A must read! I can’t wait to read more from this engaging “Operation Cowboy” series. Received for an honest review.

Hi Lizbeth, Thanks for joining us! To get started, why don’t you give readers an introduction into the Seven Brides for Seven Cowboys series, and The Bride Wore Starlight?

1. You have a passion for horses and horseback riding. How did that influence the themes and settings around your books? Pictures of horses adorned my bedroom walls from the time I was five, when I was a little city girl in Minneapolis. I collected all the stories about horses I could and had my first book boyfriend crush on Alec Ramsay in The Black Stallion series. I got my first horse as a graduation from college present from my husband, and I was hooked for life, even getting my daughter her first pony when she was six years old so we could ride together. She went on to become an equine veterinarian, and I still help her care for all the horses she’s collected since that first pony! I still have a horse of my own, so you can see I’m obsessed and have a hard time imagining a world without horses in it!
All my books have included horses to some extent. I’m not even stuck on one type of horse, or riding or rider—my first series of books revolved around English riding, dressage and eventing. My current series “Seven Brides for Seven Cowboys” takes place on a Wyoming ranch so I get to spend a lot of time with horses in these books. In my stories, I’ve used horses as therapy animals, as challenges for my characters, and as comforting best friends. I love sharing the beauty and versatility and healing power of horses with my readers.

2. What is it about your two main characters, Alec and Joely, that have made them so strong after going through such traumatic experiences? I think what’s amazing about Alec and Joely is that neither of them has any idea when their story starts just where their real strengths lie. Joely was a beauty queen several times, and even though she isn’t vain she has always believed that what she has to offer the world revolves around her physical looks. What she discovers after her physical body is broken and scarred is that she doesn’t need to trade on outer beauty—her talents of kindness, understanding, and the ability to love despite peoples’ flaws are her truest assets—and they (along with Alec’s help) are what make her strong in the end. Alec completely believes what makes him strong is the ability to bury things that remind him of pain and could make him bitter. He has a major physical disability, but he ignores it and gets on with life—and he even has the sunny disposition to go along with it. But what he doesn’t know is that burying his past and his anger really is a weakness. When he learns (with Joely’s help) to
embrace what he sees as weaknesses and truly face his fears—he grows into the truly strong and resilient man he wants to be.

3. How long have you been writing and who influenced you?I started making up stories and telling them to myself at night in bed as far back as when I was four and five years old. Later, when other kids were reading themselves to sleep, I started writing down these stories. I guess it was what would now be called fan fiction—I had lots of fun affairs and adventures with my favorite pop stars from Paul McCartney to Bobby Sherman! Eventually I started writing “real” short stories and then novels. In the 80s and 90s I fell in love with the romances of LaVyrle Spencer. To this day she’s my ideal when it comes to telling a love story and I don’t try to copy her, but I do try to live up to her example.

4. Do you have a favorite romance? Tell us!I mentioned LaVyrle Spencer, and whenever I’m asked this question I have to go back to her. Sadly, most younger romance readers today don’t know her work, but she was known for her beautiful lyrical writing and her warm, identifiable characters. My favorite romance is a book by her called “Hummingbird.” It’s an American historical about a “spinster” who takes in a wounded train robber. Their love affair was so tender, and LaVyrle wrote such a memorable first-attempt at sex scene that I’ll never forget it. Suffice it to say the first try at lovemaking was awkward at best—but so realistic. Naturally, she made up for it later—and it was totally worth

5. Where is your favorite place to write?I mostly write in my office at home. Lest you think that sounds hoity toity, however, it’s also my sewing room and storage for my granddaughter’s “grandma’s house toys,” so it’s very far from tidy and it’s not all that private. Still, it’s my clutter and filled with things I love, and during the day it’s very quiet. I have two windows so I can always see outside—perfect for daydreaming-

6. What’s on your bucket list for this year?I’m already planning to attend Romance Writers of America’s annual meeting in San Diego as well as the Romantic Times Reader Convention in Las Vegas. My “bucket list” addition is that I want my hubby to come meet me at both of them since I’ve never been to either city. I’d like to see Cirque du Soleil’s “Beatles Love” performance in Vegas, and I want to visit the zoo in San Diego because I love zoos. I’d also love to go back to Alaska and visit my dear friends—those I made when I lived in Anchorage from 2006-2009!

7. One of your books, Rescued by a Stranger was a *RWA RITA® Award Finalist. What Oh my goodness, I look back on that and I still can’t believe it happened! I was so flattered and honored because it’s a peer award, and to have made the cut with some of my absolute idols (Nora Roberts, Jill Shalvis) was a dream come true. I swear it’s also true that it was an honor just to be a finalist. I mean, with all the stellar fellow finalists—it didn’t matter in the least that I didn’t win. It was extremely special to be wined and dined and treated like a queen for a week at the convention—a very meaningful sure wouldn’t mind bringing home one of those gorgeous, golden RITA ladies!

8. Can you tell us anything about your upcoming works? I’m super excited about the last four books of the “Seven Brides for Seven Cowboys” series. The next three books will belong to the triplets, Grace, Kelly, and Raquel who were named for their father’s favorite two movie stars! Grace comes next and she meets the small-time poker player who thinks he has a generation’s-old claim to Paradise Ranch (and a very precocious five-year-old daughter).  Kelly falls in love with a secondary character from “The Bride Wore Red Boots”
– one of the veterans suffering from PTSD who has become a hotshot firefighter. It may or may not be the best choice for either of them. Raquel falls for a doctor who is a total science geek to her active tomboy personality. It’s hard to see how sparks can fly when one’s never seen Star Wars and the other won’t go out if it means missing Dr. Who. The last book of the series will introduce a surprise character: Cami Colarusso—a cousin to the Crockett sisters whom nobody knew existed. To end the series we need a little fun:  how about dinosaurs on the ranch?! In addition to the Brides books, I’m working on a proposal for a completely new book in a slightly different genre—women’s fiction. More on that to come! And I have a cross-over story coming out in May as part of a Kindle Worlds series set in Sapphire Falls—the world created by bestselling author Erin Nicholas. One of the characters from the Brides series is going to make his way to Sapphire Falls. I’m so excited, so watch for that, too!

THE BRIDE WORE STARLIGHT is another great story in the Seven Brides series. I have to admit I do think that you need to read the previous books to fully understand Joely and what she went through, but if you don’t get the chance to do that you’ll still love this story. Watching Joely and Alec come to terms with their love and their struggles is wonderful. We watch as they grow as individuals but also as a couple. I loved that. The writing is engaging and keeps you quickly turning pages. There are some laugh out loud moments, plenty of sigh worthy moments and a few other moments that will make you think. I highly recommend this series to one and all especially if you love Susan Mallery’s writing. THE BRIDE WORE STARLIGHT is another winner for Ms. Slevig and I can’t wait to see what’s next!

“Warm enough?” he asked. “Your back’s okay?”

“I’m plenty warm. And my back aches. It’ll be fine in the morning.”

“What would make it fine now?”

“Sven the masseur?”

He chuckled. “Your version of the cabana boy fantasy, huh? Fine, I can do Sven.” She’d

been joking; he was not. “Come on. Stretch out on your stomach.”

She started to turn and changed her mind. “What about you?”

“I’m fantastic. I have a beautiful woman about to let me touch her wherever I want to.”

“Wait, I never said that.”

She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him, long and deep, taking the lead,

pushing him onto his back instead of following his directive. When he groaned and pulled her to

lie on top of him, she broke the kiss. She’d done it now, and her nerves almost got the better of

her. Instead she closed her eyes and took a brave breath.

“Your leg has to be killing you,” she said. “I’m worried about it. I have no idea how to

ask you about it because you never say anything, so I’m just blurting it out.”

“My leg is okay,” he said.

“You haven’t taken off the prosthetic in two days.”

“I have. Didn’t you wonder what the heck took a guy so long in the woods at night?” He

took his turn kissing her, and she reveled, not just in his kiss but in the breadth of him beneath

her. And in the swift, undeniable swell that proved what power her mouth had over him. Thrills

pooled low in her pelvis.

The next words hung in her throat for a long time. If she said them, she’d have to be

willing to offer the same in return. Her greatest fear rose in front of her.

“I want to know all of you. I want you to . . . trust me.”

“I haven’t wanted to weird you out.”

The words were light, slightly jokey, and still she clearly heard the underlying tension.

“That’s just dumb, Alec. Weird? It’s not weird. It’s you.”

Did she mean it? Of course she did. Then how could she do anything but open herself up

in return? No matter how much it scared her.

“You’ve never made love to a one-legged guy.”

Fear flared hot just before her grin broke loose. “Am I about to?”

He pulled her back down against him and ran his hands over her seat, pulling her tight

and rolling his hips. “It might be too soon.”

She rested one elbow beside his ear, brushing his hair back with the other hand, drinking

in the texture with her fingertips. “I’m afraid to let you see, too.”

“See what?” A light, perhaps one of hopefulness, brightened his eyes.

“I have more scars than the one you’ve seen on my face.” She stopped combing through

his hair. The breath she took this time was shakier than any so far. “I’d show you mine if you

show me yours. Let’s be weirded out together.” The words were silly, and her heart skittered

around her ribcage—a scared bird that had trapped itself.

He didn’t speak. Carefully, he rolled her off of him and placed one hand on her stomach.

With gentle fingers he unsnapped her jeans and slowly rasped down the zipper. Then he sat up,

and reached for her boots. One at a time he tugged them off.

Good Ride, Cowboy by Allison Merritt
Sometimes all you need is one good ride to clear your head.
Thanks to her ex-boyfriend, Sommer Allen’s life is in shambles. She’s headed home to Courtland, Texas for her sister’s wedding, but when a quick stop a gas station ruins her plans, she’s left stranded and at the mercy of a handsome cowboy.
Perry Glidewell is on his way back to Texas after winning another championship in the arena versus a bull. When he finds Sommer having a meltdown in the middle of a parking lot, he knows he can’t leave her alone. Since her hometown is near his, it makes sense to hit the road together.
Sommer never imagined falling for a cowboy. His manners and gallant attitude win her over quickly, but with her future uncertain, she’s not quite willing to give her whole heart to Perry. He’ll do whatever it takes to break the walls around Sommer’s heart, because beneath her tough-talking exterior, he sees she’s the type of Texas girl he’s always dreamed of.

Perry opened the door. “What the hell are you doing? Are you trying to steal my truck?”
She glowered. “Of course not. You snore. I thought I’d be able to sleep out here. I was asleep, until I turned a little and set off the alarm. I’m so sorry.” She handed him the keys and knocked something off the dash.
A lacy bra landed on his bare feet. His gaze shot straight to her chest. Sommer’s t-shirt was tight around her breasts and her nipples made perky bumps in the material.
Perry clenched his teeth. Of all the damn things to notice. He bent down and picked the bra up by the strap. “Think you lost something.”
She snatched the bra out of his hand. “You try sleeping in one of these.”
“Not really my style, sweetheart.”
“It’s not like I have a garment bag to store it in. Anyway, you snore really bad. It’s like the cross between a wood chipper and a rabid lion. I can’t spend the rest of the night listening to you.”
“You could have woke me up instead of alerting the whole world to where we are.” He shook his head. “You’re one strange lady.”
“Am not.” Her lower lip slid out and she folded her arms under her breasts, pushing them up higher.

CowboyUp2GroupBundle_800pxCowboy in Waiting by Leslie P. Garcia
She’d buried a hero. She wasn’t looking for another. But her cowboy in waiting was far from a hero…
Bury enough dreams, and you’re bound to grow up.
Diana Salas Chester is a rancher’s daughter and a hero’s widow. There isn’t a lot she can’t do, from raising her daughter Gwen to facing down the loss of dream after dream. And then a birthday celebration goes wrong, and Diana winds up in Border Patrol Agent Ray Bennett’s bed.
Not many of her acquaintances approve of Ray “Baby” Bennett. But is he just the cowboy she’s been waiting for? Ray Bennett spent his life running away from the demands of his cowboy brothers and the ranching life. So when he wakes up in bed with his Border Patrol partner’s sister, he doesn’t want the complications. But suddenly the choice isn’t his to make.

Across from him, Di straightened in her chair. He looked her over appreciatively. The halter dress she wore plunged deeply, the icy blue contrasting with a smooth, even tan that went enticingly lower than he would have expected. Compassion headed toward desire. Hell, toward lust. Maybe if the night went suddenly better…
She tilted her head a little, then shook it. “You…what kind of car do you drive?” she asked abruptly.
“Yellow Corvette.” He waited for the gleam of appreciation.
“Then you’re the idiot in the yellow car!” She closed her fingers around her drink glass so hard he thought it might break, and gulped half the drink before slamming it down again.
“I will never forgive Rachel for this—this nightmare! My best friend? How could she set me up with some stupid, stuck-up, oversexed jerk in a yellow car? Damn you, Rachel!”
He gaped for a moment, then slowly closed his mouth. “Just one thing,” he asked. “Who’s Rachel?”
About Leslie Garcia:

The Heartbroken Cowboy by Melissa Keir

Love isn’t found at the bottom of a bottle…
Johnson O’Neill joined The Heartsong Ranch to escape his addiction. One night at a friend’s wedding, stress causes him to fall off the wagon and into the arms of the woman of his dreams.
Debra Donahue lost her husband to alcohol then pulled herself up by her bootstraps becoming a million-dollar selling real estate agent. One night with a sexy cowboy and a bottle of whiskey, Debra falls hard.
Can an alcoholic cowboy and a brokenhearted woman find love despite their fears? Or will the bottom of a bottle claim another happily ever after?

“I don’t drink, but could use a strong one, right now. Not this sissy stuff.” He lifted the glass to his lips, downed the contents, and shoved his now-empty champagne flute away before he leaned in toward her. The smell of alcohol on his breath hinted that he’d already had too much to drink. “Know anyone around here with some whiskey?” The dark sapphire of his eyes chilled her. This was a man used to getting what he wanted. “I’d even share.” His voice deepened and became husky with his offer and she shivered.
“I don’t drink with men I don’t know.” Debra stuck out her hand. “I’m Debra, and you are?”
The man grabbed another glass of champagne off a passing waiter’s tray and guzzled the drink in one swallow. “The name’s Johnson O’Neill. Now about that whiskey.” He reached out and drew her up to standing then tugged her in close to him. Wrapping his arm around her back, he moved her body in a slow two-step motion.
Debra gazed into his eyes. “You don’t have to seduce me for the whiskey.” She stepped out of his embrace and put her hands on her hips. She frowned.
“That’s not why I drew you into my arms. You were tapping your foot when I arrived—and I thought you might like a dance. A pretty woman like you shouldn’t be sitting alone.” He stretched his palm out again in a plea.
About Melissa Keir:
Melissa Keir has always wanted to be an author when she wasn’t hoping for a career as a race car driver. Her love of books was instilled by her mother and grandparents who were avid readers. She’d often sneak books away from them so that she could fantasize about those strong alpha males and plucky heroines. In middle school and high school, Melissa used to write sappy love poems and shared them with her friends and still has those poems today! In college her writing changed to sarcastic musings on life as well as poems with a modern twist on fairy tales and won awards for her writing. You can find many of these musings along with her latest releases on her website and blog.
As a writer, Melissa likes to keep current on topics of interest in the world of writing. She’s a member of the Romance Writers of America, Mid-Michigan RWA Chapter, and EPIC. She is always interested in improving her writing through classes and seminars.
Melissa doesn’t believe in down time. She’s always keeping busy. Melissa is a wife and mother, an elementary school teacher, a movie reviewer, an owner of a publishing company as well as an author. Her home blends two families and is a lot like the Brady Bunch, without Alice- a large grocery bill, tons of dirty dishes and a mound of laundry. She loves to write stories that feature happy endings and is often seen plotting her next story.

CowboyUp2GroupBundle_800pxCowboy in Trouble by Autumn Piper
A cowboy on the run and a girl on the rebound make for a messy fling.
Colby may be having the worst day ever. He wakes up at gunpoint, “hired” by a stranger to do a new job he doesn’t want. Worried the load he’s hauling is contraband, he walks off the job once he’s out of sight of his new employer. Running may not be his best plan, but he needs time to find a way out of this mess.
Delta’s day starts off rough when her pickup stalls on the side of the road. Lucky for her, a handsome cowboy comes along and works mechanical magic on the poor old truck. They strike a deal: he’ll help her out around the farm in exchange for a place to lay low for a few days. He turns out to be handy in all the right ways. A real keeper…not that she’s interested in keeping a man right now. She can afford a rebound fling, but nothing more.
Besides, once Colby gets rid of the crime boss breathing down his neck, he’ll hit the trail. A rodeo circuit cowboy from Oklahoma wouldn’t want to stick around on a little farm in Colorado. Or would he?

The door across the hall opened and by the time she turned around, Colby stood there in nothing but a towel. Hubbahubba, a very small towel, since she kept her nice big ones downstairs and hadn’t remembered to provide him one.
Um. Dripping, mostly naked, and looking as surprised as she felt… Wow. Those shoulders looked even better without a shirt. He had the prettiest eyes. Did guys like their eyes being called pretty? Whatever. Nice green-gray. And oh, how she’d appreciate a wardrobe malfunction right about now, just a little slippage of that towel. Although the healthy bulge beneath might not allow it to slip far.
“Er,” she answered ever-so-intelligently. “Sorry.”
“Sorry,” he said at the same time. “Forgot my bag in here.”
Caught leering. Her face must be flame-red. “Thought I had time to make up the bed for you.”
“I’ll just…” He indicated his bag on the floor by the window.
“Oh. Sure.” She stepped aside so he could get to it. Lord, please grant us a wardrobe malfunction…
He picked up his bag without the towel slipping, although she had to say it had soaked up water in some prime spots and clung just right.
As he passed by her, he paused, and she tore her eyes away. Reluctantly. God. Her mother had definitely taught her it was rude to stare. The poor guy probably worried she’d attack him in the night. He was hot enough, it had probably happened before.
“Ditto,” he said.
With his free hand, he rubbed his thumb over her chin. “Whatever you’re thinking, right back atcha.” Looking up into his eyes was like riding the downhill part of a rollercoaster. Her heart screamed Weeeee!

CowboyUp2_800pxA Cowboy’s Heaven by Sara Walter Ellwood
From the hell of lost love, can they find heaven together?
Katie Chester is alone in the world. After losing her husband and then her parents, she’s left to run Heaven, a thousand-acre ranch encompassing nearly an entire Montana mountain. She rents out a suite of rooms, but ends up with a boarder who shakes her to her foundation.
When Pennsylvanian ex-Army doctor Collin Kirkpatrick lost his wife a year ago, he lost his world. He needs to escape the pain, and where better than in an isolated town in the West? He answers an ad for resident doctor in Evansville, Montana, but is surprised to find Heaven and the angel residing there.
But can they leave their grief and pain in the past to blaze a new path into the future?

He smirked at her as he sat beside her on the hay bale. “You’re laughing at me.”
“Not at all. You’re actually a pleasant surprise, Dr. Kirkpatrick.”
“I hope in a good way.” He winked at her and quirked his lips up into a lopsided smile, then turned his attention fully on the cow and calf, and leaned over his long legs with his elbow planted on his knees.
The calf suddenly lurched herself onto her back feet and Collin grinned from ear to ear. “She’s a beauty.”
Dear God, he more than surprised her, he overwhelmed her, and yes, it was in a good way. A very good way.
Katie let out a breath and violently shivered. He picked up the discarded blanket and pulled it over her legs. “You’re going to catch your death. Were you out in this cold all day?”
She nodded and swallowed. No way could she tell him that the sensation had nothing to do with the cold, and everything to do with him.
With a deep breath to steady her racing heart, she watched as the calf latched onto one of her mother’s teats and started sucking with loud, hungry pulls.
“We can go inside in a few moments.” Sweet mercy, was that low, husky voice hers?
Collin only nodded as they watched the miracle of life before him.

CowboyUp2GroupBundle_800pxCowboy Proud by D’Ann Lindun
She left town to chase her dreams… He stayed and ignored his… Can they find their dreams together?
All Madeline Harper ever wanted was to escape the tight fences of Black Mountain, Colorado. Nothing would stop her from pursuing her goals–not a devoted boyfriend or infant son. Leaving everything behind, she landed her dream job as a Western Girl jeans model. Her sister’s wedding is the only thing that can entice her home. What she learns upon her return shakes her to the core…and changes everything.
For the last five years Shan Ellis’ life has consisted of taking care of his son and being a cowhand on his parents’ ranch. He scarified everything to be a single dad. College. A career. Girls. Now, the one woman he can’t forget is back in town. Can he take a chance, and risk his heart, or steer clear and never know what might have been?

This is how Shan had always pictured his life.
Doing what he loved with his wife and children.
Like him, Mason lived to be with the horses and cows. Too bad his mother hated the cowboy lifestyle with a passion. Shan couldn’t forget that for a second. Madeline Harper had ripped out his guts once before—he’d be damned if he’d let her do it again. Even if she wore a mile-wide smile and looked as at home on the back of a horse, herding cows as well as any cowgirl she wasn’t happy here. He couldn’t make her love the life, their son or him.
His good mood faded.
Last night, Callie Donovan had all but mounted him on the dance floor. He liked her well enough, but turned down her advances because he couldn’t get his mind off the dark-haired beauty from his past. In the five years since Maddy left town he’d held onto to the hope she’d return.
He was a fool.
Nothing had changed. He wanted a family; she craved fame and fortune.
About D’Ann Lindun:
Falling in love with romance novels the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She was hooked! She began writing and never looked back. Romance appeals to her because there’s just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to have a happy ending. D’Ann’s particular favorites usually feature cowboys and the women who love them. This is probably because she draws inspiration from the area where she lives, Western Colorado, her husband of twenty-nine years and their daughter. Composites of their small farm, herd of horses, five Australian shepherds, a Queensland heeler, two ducks and cats of every shape and color often show up in her stories!

by Annie Evans

ebook, 126 pages
Published August 13th 2014
by Ellora’s Cave

Clay Hearts, Book One

Fritz Carter has carved out a nice life in his hometown of Serenity, Georgia. Together with his brothers, they’ve made the family farm more successful than ever. Fritz wants for very little—save for the girl he’d loved in high school. The girl who’d left Serenity behind…left Fritz behind as well.
The girl who just sauntered into the local dive bar, looking all woman and hotter than ever.
Fritz would have to be blind not to want Kai back in his bed. He’d also have to be stupid to give her his heart. Not again. Not right away. They’ve both changed, and past hurts haven’t healed as well as either had thought. A few sultry summer nights in Kai’s arms don’t equal love…even if his heart says otherwise.

Kai glared at her cell phone lying on the bar in front of her, willing it to flash back with a text from her friend Grace. She was supposed to meet Kai at Sam’s thirty minutes ago. The last thing on earth she wanted to do was sit in a bar alone, especially overdressed like she was. She stood out like a fly in the sugar bowl. Although the alcohol was taking the edge off her temper.
What had ever made her believe she could move back to Serenity and her parents would stay out of her life? She must have been insane to think her mother could ever do that. God forbid. No, when she found out Kai had broken off her engagement to Phillip and was moving back home, her mother’s matchmaking wheels started spinning in high gear.
Her plan had been to stay in her old bedroom for a few months until she could find a place of her own, but she could already tell she’d be lucky to last a week. There was always the option of moving in with Grace, but her apartment was tiny and Kai wanted privacy too much to share minimal square footage. So the first thing on her agenda for Monday morning was to cruise town searching out “For Rent” signs and scanning the papers.
Earlier tonight at her cousin’s wedding reception, her mother had forced Trent Lathrop on her. Ick. How could he have a bald spot and a paunch at thirty? Every time he’d spoken, his garlic breath nearly knocked her off her chair.
As soon as the cake was cut, Kai hightailed it out of there and made a beeline for the closest bar before she was missed. Problem was she was on foot. Her stilettos were cute to look at and did great things for her calves, but they weren’t exactly conducive to walking long distances. Her poor pinched toes were crying in protest, begging to be set free.
Her phone’s screen blinked in front of her with a message from Grace.
Sorry, not gonna make it. Long day. Can u get a ride home?
That killed her buzz. Kai groaned and dropped her forehead to the bar. She couldn’t blame Grace, really. Kai was the one who’d slunk away from the wedding reception, where she’d had a ride home. And she’d asked Grace to join her for a drink knowing Grace had worked all day. To be upset with her would be unfair, so she’d just have to suck it up and deal with the dilemma.
Seth wandered back over after waiting on other customers. “Something wrong, Kai?”
“Grace isn’t coming and she was my ride home.”
“I’m sure you won’t have any trouble catching a lift with somebody here, but if you care to wait, I’ll drop you off. I go right by your folks’ place on my way home.”
“Thanks, Seth. I may need to take you up on that.”
She sent Grace a text telling her not to worry, she had it covered.
“Can I set you up with more shots? Since you’re not drivin’ and all.” Seth gave her a broad smile and added a wink for good measure.
“Sure, why not? I haven’t let my hair down in a long time. Too bad I’m doing it all by myself.”
Just as the words left her lips, Hoyt Tanner returned from a stroll around the bar. Obviously he’d struck out elsewhere and was back for another go at talking Kai out of her panties. He was about to be disappointed for the second time. All smooth, suave, wannabe cowboy with his crisp, too-tight Wranglers, pristine Stetson and roving hands. Every time he opened his mouth, Kai wanted to shove it full of cocktail napkins. Why couldn’t the boy take a hint?
Damn, it had been a mistake to act on her impulse. She should have stayed at the wedding reception and gotten drunk on champagne instead of Jack Daniel’s. Her mother would’ve crapped a gold brick, but then she wouldn’t be too pleased to know her only daughter was sitting alone in a dive bar down the street getting soused either. Nothing Kai ever did made her mother happy.
Seth sat three shot glasses in front of her and poured each one full of the amber-colored firewater. Without preamble, Kai swallowed her fourth of the night in one burning, unladylike gulp while silently toasting her mother. As soon as the liquor hit her stomach, heat spread outward like an atomic bomb had gone off. It crawled upward, warming her neck and face. She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping that when she opened them again they’d still focus, and with any luck Hoyt would’ve magically disappeared.
So what if she got a little drunk? Okay, a lot drunk. She wasn’t kidding when she told Seth it had been a long time, since before she graduated college, and of course, before she met Phillip.
Smart, handsome, proper Phillip Rutherford, with a pedigree the size of the Athens phonebook. Everything about him was perfect—perfect job, perfect hair, perfect smile, perfect family—and perfectly boring sex. Quick, missionary-style, orgasm-less sex. She’d gotten really good at getting herself off afterward while he showered. And Phillip always showered after sex.
Aside from being stupid enough to think she could live with “perfect” the rest of her days, what on earth ever made her think she could live with that in the bedroom? She should’ve been tipped off when they’d visited his parents one weekend and he’d refused to do it under their roof. It wasn’t as if he was going to make her scream with ecstasy or anything. Or he wouldn’t have a shower handy. For goodness sake, they lived like Rockefellers.
Hoyt’s hand gradually made its way down her back. Kai swallowed her fifth shot, gritting her teeth as it numbed her throat.
“So, sugar butt, I say you’n me ditch this place for somewhere a little more…private,” he said, giving her a pat on the ass with the last word. Her face grew hot and this time it wasn’t caused from the liquor.
Sugar butt?
As Kai readied to ask Hoyt to remove his big paw from her ass, a husky male voice spoke from behind and beat her to it. “Take a hike, Tanner, before I break every f**kin’ finger on that wanderin’ hand of yours.”
While her muscles automatically tensed, something akin to warm honey pooled in the pit of her belly. Her traitorous n*****s hardened to painful points beneath the thin fabric of her dress. The heat from his body touched her back and shoulders as if he were pressed against her, skin on skin. There was no mistaking that voice—rough and potent as the whiskey she’d just inhaled—or the way her senses reacted to its owner.
A little voice inside her head screamed run while you can! Meanwhile other body parts begged no. Stay. Touch.
“I believe the lady here might have somethin’ to say about that,” Hoyt replied.
Staring at the colorful wall of liquor bottles in front of her, Kai said, “Get lost, Hoyt.”
Out of the corner of her eye, she watched Hoyt’s mouth open to say something, then snap shut as his face turned as red as a beet.
“You’re an asshole, Carter,” he spat at Fritz.
“I’ve never denied that,” was Fritz’s cool answer.
Hoyt pushed away from the bar and stomped off.
Long arms stretched past her shoulders, trapping her between his body and the edge of the bar, while warm breath fanned across her exposed nape. His aftershave teased her nose, something spicy and masculine and all Fritz. But he didn’t touch her, and of course, a small part of her felt disappointed.
He murmured next to her ear, “Of all the gin joints in this town, you had to walk into mine.”
Kai couldn’t stop the smile pulling at the corners of her mouth any more than she could stop the tiny shudder that rippled through her body. God, let him stay behind me. Please don’t let me see that face because I’ll go under.
“That’s mighty ballsy, borrowing a line from Bogey,” she quipped.
Then he was there, close, propped on his elbow inches away from her. Kai took a deep breath and gradually raised her gaze to his face.
Damn. Just…damn.
The years had honed him from cute to fine. Ruggedly handsome. Almost too pretty for a man. He should be in one of those magazine ads for four-wheel-drive trucks—shirtless, sweaty and fixing fence.
Back then he’d worn his chocolate-brown hair longer, a bit shaggier. Now it was trimmed short and neat, but still made her palms itch to grab double handfuls. Eyes the color of Spanish moss studied her face, a trace of amusement dancing in their depths. Those soft, full lips Kai remembered all too well. The thick column of his neck disappeared into the collar of a plaid Western-style shirt. A few open snaps revealed a dusting of dark chest hair. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, exposing tanned, corded forearms. Broad chest, narrow hips, long legs. Maturity looked awful good on him.
“I don’t think he’ll mind. He’s dead.” Leave it to Fritz to be concise. Kai tried hard not to laugh.
“You know, I had Mr. Tanner under control.”
His eyes narrowed. “When? Before or after he touched your ass?”
“I’m quite capable of taking care of myself.”
He laughed and rubbed his jaw. “How well I know, Donnelly. How well I know.”
The corners of his eyes crinkled attractively when he smiled and Kai felt her stomach flutter. Lord Almighty, the man was still more potent than the eighty-proof alcohol patiently waiting in the last shot glass in front of her. He should come with a warning label—one look at him will melt your p*****s right along with your resistance. She gulped the liquor down, thinking she needed it to steel herself against the onslaught of raw lust threatening to overtake her. It was almost as if time had been turned back and she was eighteen again, completely smitten yet scared to death of the effect he had on her, body and soul.
Fritz leaned in close. “How many of those have you had tonight?”
“Not enough.”
One dark eyebrow shot up. “You’re not drivin’ I hope.”
Seth picked that perfect moment to butt into the conversation.
“Nope, she ain’t drivin’. I was gonna give her a lift home but maybe you could, Fritz, so she won’t have to wait on me to close up.”
Kai gave Seth the stink-eye but he just shrugged his shoulders.
Without taking his watchful gaze off Kai, Fritz pulled money from his shirt pocket and tossed it on the bar. “Close out her tab, Seth, and give us the rest of that bottle of Jack.”
She was being manhandled and it was starting to p*** her off. “I can pay my own tab, thank you very much, and I can find my own way home.”
Seth slid the bottle of whiskey across the bar and Fritz tucked it under his arm, then grabbed her elbow to help her stand. Kai snatched her arm away.
“I’m quite capable of walking on my own!”
“You’re gonna break an ankle in those damn shoes. Give me your arm, Kai.”
Kai spun around on the barstool and planted her feet on the floor. When she stood, the room tilted sideways and so did she. Fritz caught her around the waist with one arm, and if she wasn’t mistaken, snickered under his breath.
“Easy there, tiger.”
Once everything was somewhat level again, she shoved her shoulders back, put one foot in front of the other and wobbled out of the bar.
