ANDREA JOHNSON BECK,SUSPENSE AUTHOR…

Deadly Deception

SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, SIT BACK AND  ENJOY OUR VISIT WITH AUTHOR ANDREA JOHNSON BECK. WELCOME ANDREA!!

ANDREA BECKMBA&M: First, let me say Andrea, welcome to My Book Addiction and More. We hope you had a wonderful holiday.
Now, tell us a little about Andrea Beck?

Thank you so much for having me, I’m very excited. My family did have a fantastic holiday, it was nice and quiet.
I reside in North Carolina, near Raleigh, with my husband and twelve year old son. I am a homeschool mama, began when Logan was in second grade. Best thing we have ever done. We just moved to North Carolina from Florida four months ago, so we are still newbie’s to the area. I write for three amazing online magazines, The Homeschool Mosaics, Home Educating Family Blog, and my newest writing family, The In-Depth Genealogist.

MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind “Deadly Deception”?
I love a good crime drama, the books and movies that make you wonder “Who did it?” Just when you think you figured it out, boom, something happens and changes your thinking. I also wanted to write a heroine who isn’t whiny or thick. Anne has her naive moments but nothing that would make you want to slap her silly. Strong women inspire me, especially in a world where there is illicit activity going on and men control that environment. I love when the women rise up and take control.

MBA&M: What do you feel the allure of suspense is to readers?
It makes you think. It’s not mindless reading. You have to pay attention to the plot and characters because if you don’t, you’re lost.
MBA&M: How hard is it to write a crime/suspense,where did you get your information from and give our readers some insight into the research required to write an authentic crime/suspense story?
It can tricky because you want it as realistic as possible. I turned to a attorney friend of mine and picked her brain. I have been a mob junkie for years. Any book or movie pertaining to the mob and all the various crime families in the world, I’ve read or seen. There is something about the dark underbelly that entices me. Crime families have evolved over the years, they are still prevalent in our society but operate differently. If I told you how I knew that, then I’d have to go in to hiding.
MBA&M: In five words or less describe your writing style to our readers?
Detailed and Dialogue

MBA&M: Give our readers some background on the “Deadly” series? How many books, etc?
Deadly Deception is based in Minneapolis where Dr. Anne Jamison is a renowned  neuropsychiatrist for adolescents, who is engaged to prominent attorney, Adam Whitney. Her past haunts her daily. Three years earlier her then boyfriend, Carter Leeds, died in a rafting accident but they were unable to recover his body so, Anne feels this sense of void and guilt. Anne receives a cryptic note that points to Carter and that he may very well be alive. She discovers that her own fiance may have played a part in Carter’s disappearance and is working for a ruthless crime family. Anne decides to find the truth out herself which places her in a very dangerous position.
There will be three books in the series, I am currently working on Deadly Redemption which is set to release Spring 2013. And Deadly Revelation will release late 2013.

MBA&M: If you could pick one character from any book, real or fiction, who would it be and why?
Elizabeth Bennet from Pride & Prejudice. I love her wit and strength. Though quite prideful, she sticks with what she believes in and isn’t afraid to speak her mind.

MBA&M: What is your favorite genre to read?
Crime/Suspense with a dash of romance. Not suck face through the entire book romance but just enough peppered throughout. Some are a little too detailed for me, I like to use my imagination.

Thank you, Andrea, for visiting with us and our readers today! Now, please tell our readers where to find you and where they can purchase “Deadly Deception”?

INTERVIEW WITH MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE AUTHOR,JUDY FITZWATER….

IT IS OUR PLEASURE TO WELCOME TO JUDY FITZWATER TO MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE TODAY….

WELCOME JUDY!!

Good morning Judy and welcome to My Book Addiction and More…

MBA&M: Please give our readers a few tidbits about Judy Fitzwater?

My dad was in the Air Force, so we moved around a good bit when I was young. That means I don’t really have a hometown and that’s something I’ve always missed. On the other hand, moving a lot taught me that we really do have the ability to be whoever we want to be, that life is an adventure, one that is, or can be, forever changing. And that home isn’t a place on the map. It’s wherever your family is.

As for writing, it’s the only thing I’ve truly wanted to do professionally.  When I wrote my first book, I didn’t know anyone who had ever published a novel. I was living in North Carolina with my husband and raising two small children. I took a job freelancing for a local weekly newspaper. It didn’t pay much, but I could work from home and write while my kids watched Sesame Street or napped. It taught me to meet deadlines, learn organization, and sometimes make an article out of almost anything. Oh, and I got to cover the superior court trials for our county, which was always interesting. That’s when I started writing my first mystery. I’d write some, put the manuscript away for months, take it back out, and work some more. This went on for several years. Then one day I took it out, and, to my surprise, it was almost done. I finished it just before my husband was transferred to D.C. That first book didn’t sell, but I found a terrific writers’ group and rolled all of my fellow writers’ frustrations over publishing into the humorous six-book Jennifer Marsh Mysteries.  Ironically, DYING TO GET PUBLISHED, a novel about a writer desperate to get published, sold on its first outing, unsolicited, to the head of the mystery department of Ballantine Books. It was a book I thought I’d never sell because it skewers the whole publishing industry. And now I’ve switched from writing cozy mysteries to romantic suspense, which I also love.

MBA&M: What was the inspiration behind writing “Drowning In Air”?

I was living in the Washington, D.C., suburbs in October of 2002  when two snipers terrorized the area for three weeks, killing ten people and wounding three more before they were caught. It was a horrible experience. The shootings seemed totally random. A woman shopping at a Home Depot, a bus driver, a man mowing grass… Everyone felt at risk. Even stopping at a stoplight seemed dangerous, and news anchors were actually telling people to move quickly in a zigzag manner when going to and from their parked cars. People were having their groceries delivered to their homes rather than go to the store. It made me wonder about the victims and the people who loved them, how those events affected their lives. I didn’t write about it right away, but it was something that stayed in my mind, and I knew it would someday wind up as the germ for a book. In DROWNING IN AIR, it’s a drive-by shooting spree that kills eight people in a single evening. My heroine Eva is out walking with her boyfriend. He’s shot and dies in her arms. I wanted to explore how a seventeen-year-old would react to that sort of tragedy, how she could find a way to cope with life after that experience. Eva Keller chooses to make herself strong, to learn martial arts, to master weapons, to take charge of her life in a way most of us can’t even imagine in order to keep her fear at bay. She believes that no one can take life for granted, that it can be snatched away at any second. The book begins fifteen years after the shootings when Eva is thirty-two and a successful documentary filmmaker. The shooter in my book has never been brought to justice, and Eva is determined to see that he is. Besides being a good mystery with plenty of suspense, the book is  about her strength and her finally coming to terms with David’s death. She has to accept that she has a future and that she has a right to be happy and live without fear. She has to heal. And she has to give herself permission to love someone.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write mystery/suspense genre?

I’ve always loved reading mysteries—from Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, and Gothic romances to hard-boiled detectives and true crime.  I love the puzzle, the ingenuity of the villain, and the sharp wit of the detective. When I decided to write novels, it was an obvious choice.  I don’t write using an outline and usually don’t know who the killer is until I get several chapters into the book.  I begin with a hook, a situation that intrigues me and work outward from there. I kid that my outline is someone gets killed and then someone solves the crime.  If I wrote strictly about relationships, I’m not sure I’d be able to figure out when to end the book—unless I killed somebody off. My Jennifer Marsh mystery series has a lot of humor in it, along with what I hope are intriguing plots. But I try to never let the humor play down or any way detract from the fact that someone is dead and that’s tragic. As for writing suspense, what could be more fun than putting someone in an impossible situation and watching them work their way out of it. Of course the catch is that I’m the one who has to figure out HOW they’re going to survive.

MBA&M: If you don’t mind, tell our readers a little about the publishing community for self published authors?

The publishing industry is changing rapidly, and we authors, as well as traditional publishers, are feeling our way through this brave new world. I’ve found other authors, who’ve decided to take charge of their own books, to be extremely generous in sharing information.  I think it helps tremendously to have been published the old-fashioned way. I’m familiar with all the elements that go into putting a book on the market, from editing to title and cover selection, to writing blurbs and marketing the product.  NinC, an organization for traditionally published writers, has been invaluable in offering information, as has Backlist e-Books, which was formed to help writers make their out-of-print books available for readers who may have missed them the first time around. A lot goes into self-publishing.  It’s important to keep the quality of the book up to a professional level. Working with a critique group or partner continues to be invaluable. But all those things we authors used to gripe about—lack of control over titles and covers, insufficient publicity, etc.—have now landed squarely in our laps.  It’s great to have control, but it’s a lot of responsibility.  And having others share their experiences—what works and what doesn’t—is truly great. Without a backlist or books currently in print, I’m sure it’s hard for a new writer to self publish, but you hear amazing stories of people who have done it and become very successful. I think there’s real joy in not having to worry that a book fits the exact requirements of a specific publishing house. No more rejections that say, “Loved the book, but it’s just not right for our house.”

MBA&M: What do you find is the hardest experience in self-publishing promotions?

I’ve never been a big fan of promoting my books. I did a lot of book signings and most were like watching paint dry. It’s hard for me to ask people to buy my books, even when I KNOW they’ll enjoy reading them. I do, however, love to talk about writing and about my books, so I’ve done a lot of public speaking and enjoyed being on panels at mystery conventions. Doing things like this interview are fun for me.  But how to get the word out about any new book, especially when there are so many to choose from on the market, is difficult. DROWNING IN AIR is my first independent release, which means I’m really just learning my way with this one.

MBA&M: Do you find bloggers, and reviewers do not want to review or promote self published authors? Why do you think this is so? And how do you think this can be changed?

It’s definitely harder to get reviewers and bloggers interested in looking at self-pubbed work, but having traditionally published books has helped. I’m sure the ones that won’t review independently published books are missing out on some really great reads. It will change. Self-pubbing is relatively new, at least as far as the Internet is concerned. I’ve heard multi-published writers say they’ll never go back to traditional publishing.  And I must say it’s a real thrill to select my own covers and blurbs, to have my books out there exactly how I want them to be. Reviewers will have to catch up with the changing reality of publishing, just like the rest of us.

Blood. All over her hands. And Eva Keller doesn’t know how it got there or whose it is. Or how she got to a gas station in downtown Washington, D.C., in the middle of the night with no car. The last 32 hours of her life are a complete blank. And the man she remembers going to meet is missing.

When she arrives home late that night, she finds ruggedly handsome police officer Simon Talbot waiting for her. She has no idea who he is or why she feels such a strong connection to him, but he certainly seems to remember her. Can she trust him?

Fifteen years ago, Eva watched helplessly as her teen-aged boyfriend died in her arms, the victim of a drive-by shooting spree that took the lives of eight people one August evening. That event shaped her life and left her damaged. Now a successful documentary film maker, Eva has only one goal: to prove on film that Luther Isaacs, a petty thief just released from prison, was the killer.

But someone is trying to kill Eva and will stop at nothing to keep her from proving who killed those eight people.

DROWNING IN AIR is a taut romantic thriller, filled with twists and turns. It’s a story of strength, survival, determination, love, danger, and, ultimately, redemption.

GIVEAWAY AND GUEST POST WITH DEBUT AUTHOR,GEORGE M MOSER…

AUTHORIGHT AND MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE IS HONORED TO PRESENT…

DEBUT AUTHOR,GEORGE M MOSER!

WELCOME GEORGE!

Good morning George, and welcome to My Book Addiction and More!

GMM: Good morning to you and thank you for inviting me. I am very excited to be here.

MBA&M: Tell our readers a few tidbits about Geore Moser?

Some interesting things about myself. I grew up in a small family business. My grandfather and father started the business over fifty years ago. We have been in many different industries including real estate, banking, conferencing and banquets, heating and air conditioning to name just a few. I guess now you can add writing to my repertoire.

I have a wonderful family and live just outside Chicago. One of my favorite places in the whole world is Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We love the mountains and the large open spaces. I have traveled all over the world and have some fantastic stories to tell.

MBA&M: What made you decide to write a dark comedy with horror?

GMM: I have always been infatuated with certain writers like Mark Twain and JRR Tolkien. As I became older, I started looking for writers I could relate with more as myself. I am a very big Stephen King fan. He’s one of those writers who just know how to make the reader feel his energy. I always thought he was one of the best and I wanted to emulate him as a writer. Another writer I really love is Michael Crichton. He is very detailed in his research of a book and has some exciting stories to tell.

So I guess the two most influential writers of myself were both King and Crichton. I wanted to write some scary novels that people couldn’t put down. I wanted detail in my characters and a story to go along with it. What I did not want was a book of senseless killings just to be scary. I wanted a purpose to the book.

Nine Lives started off as a simple story. Since this is my first book, I discovered many things most authors probably already know. The book took a life of it’s own. My writing style came out and I began writing subconsciously about things in my life. I had fun writing the book and so my sense of humor followed suit. So in essence, I really didn’t sit down and say to myself, “I am going to write a dark comedy with horror.” The book just went that way and I discovered my own sense of writing.

MBA&M:  What if anything made you want to write “NINE LIVES”,with feline set on revenge and a banker?

GMM: Over the years, I have collected ideas for books that I would like to write. I probably have  nearly fifty ideas so far. Like many people, writing to me was a dream that I figured would never really happen. Sitting down and actually taking it serious, takes a certain dedication. Nine Lives is my first novel and I wanted to start off with something simple, something I knew where it was going.

Nine Lives is based on a real life experience. It was easy for me to start the book off because I already knew what happened. I had, what I thought of as an outline for the book. What I wasn’t expecting was, where the book would take me. I just figured a book was planned. Instead, the book took off into a world of it’s own. I started writing subconsciously about myself and the things that I learned.

I mentioned my family was in the banking industry. During this time of my writing, my families bank was taken over by the government. My dad started the bank over 35 years ago. To watch how the government comes in and does whatever they want to take over his bank was really sad. I don’t think many people have any idea how horrible it is to have something you have worked your entire life to build, only to have it taken away from you. They manipulate their own rules to their advantage. We’re made out to be the bad guys. Kind of like Michael Morino, the main character in the book. He was made out to be the crazy cat killer. The cat tries to take everything from Michael. The cat tries to take everything Michael loves and worked so hard for. A writer writes what he knows and I happened to write about my experience as a business man and banker. I didn’t want to write just another slasher novel with no meaning, I ended up writing about something with a lesson of my own. I want people to know, if you love something so much, don’t hold back. Go after it and chase that dream of yours.

Basically, I never had the intention of writing about a feline set on revenge and a banker. I picked a career for Michael that I could relate to. Suddenly, the book had meaning and it went off in a different course that I am very satisfied with.

MBA&M: If you could switch place with any character in “NINE LIVES”, who would it be and why?

GMM: That’s a hard one. I don’t know if I would switch places with anyone in the book because I think their all nuts! Okay, that made me laugh but isn’t that part of what makes the book so fun to read? I guess the wife Jenny is the only real sensible one in the book.

I suppose a writer usually writes about himself. That would make me Michael Morino but I didn’t write him completely as myself. I do like the Chief of police, Marty Dugan. I found I was writing too many swear words in the book and I really didn’t want to do that. So I made him out as a simple guy, maybe old fashion. His wife doesn’t like him swearing and so he always says, “Son of a Barbie.” That was just my sense of humor but it was also me saying, what’s the point in swearing all the time? With that being said, I also think when a person is running for their lives, they may just shout a few obscenities.

MBA&M: Do you have any regrets?

GMM: My only regret is that I rushed out the book initially. I finished this book over a year ago and it was really exciting. However, it was not edited and parts of the story actually changed. I just figured an agent would take care of all those wonderful things for me. So I rushed it out looking for an agent, not realizing they wanted the finished product. A lesson learned for me.

The book looks fabulous now after editing and polishing. I worked very hard on the book after finishing it. It’s a book I am very proud of.

MBA&M: If not writing what would you be your career choice?

GMM: Well, I have already done so much in my life already. If I had a choice of doing what ever I wanted, it wouldn’t be a serious one. I would probably be a scuba diver instructor or something around the water because I love the ocean. Any openings in Hawaii?

Seriously, I think my wife would be upset if I was a scuba diving instructor. Besides, I can’t stay in one place for very long. I need something that takes me places different. Something that challenges me to be a better person. I guess that’s why writing is something I absolutely love. How about a movie producer instead?

MBA&M: Tell our readers where to find you and where “NINE LIVES” is available?

GMM: I have a website at http://gmmoser.com where there is a link to purchase my book. Nine Lives is available online at just about any place available including Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble. I have been working on getting it in stores, most of the local Barnes and Noble stores near Chicago are stocking it now and I am starting to set my focus further out to places like Iowa and Missouri.

George,do you have anything to add today?

GMM: Actually I do have one more thing to add. I am finishing up another novel. I plan on taking my time with this one cleaning it up. I don’t want to say it’s a series but my first three books are very related. I kind of like to make it cryptic. I think readers are smart and will figure it out.

Thank you so much My Book Addiction and More for having me!

You are so welcome and thank you for the fantastic post!!

NINE LIVES:A STORY OF HORROR

GEORGE M.  MOSER

Paperback:364 pages

Publisher:iUniverse (March 1, 2012)

Language:English

ISBN-10:1469753111

ISBN-13: 978-1469753119

(from the author’s website)

This all started the day I ran over a cat with my sports car squeezed in like a tuna in a small alcove of the garage. There were many ideas I had for a book but this one seemed the most likely if I was to ever begin writing. I knew just where this one was going from the beginning but as I learned stories end up growing a life of their own like this one did. It was simple, write a story about a guy who kills a cat and you can guess the rest right? Life sometimes throws a curveball and it gives us time to reflect.

How could something possibly be missing in the life of Michael Morino? Marrying his college sweetheart, the two of them bought the house of their dreams. A beautiful baby boy and his trustworthy companion Max their dog completed the dream. Michael was at the top of his game with a promotion at his job to the upper floors of management. It was everything a person could hope for. Dreams are just that, a journey of hope barely out of reach that keeps us striving to reach our destiny.

Life has a way of constantly changing, our hopes and dreams lost and forgotten. Michael’s Dad died leaving him the one thing that meant the most to them. A letter accompanied the car telling Michael to, “dream.” It was that very car that started a sequence of events accidentally killing a cat. The cat was dead—he was certain of it—yet something seemed out of place.

Do cats really have nine lives? This thought never occurred to Michael until one cat after another returned with a vengeance threatening every part of his life. Two people kept calling him to follow his dreams. His wife Jenny loved him and pushed him to chase it. It was the second person that bothered him more because that person was dead. His Father left a message to “Drive it” but what had he meant by that? Then there were the others, the ones who tried to keep him on the path he was on. Between his boss, the crazy lunatic police lieutenant, and his high school girlfriend who recently became a stalker, Michael finds himself struggling to find an answer before its too late.

Is it possible we all have more than one life to live?

GIVEAWAY AND VISIT WITH CAROLINE MILLER,AUTHOR OF “GOTHIC SPRING”…

NURTURE YOUR BOOKS AND MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS….

CAROLINE MILLER…

MBA&M: TELL OUR READERS A FEW TIDBITS ABOUT CAROLINE MILLER

CAROLINE: I’m the child of a Costa Rican mother and an American father with strong Germanic roots. His family name was  Mueller but it was changed to Miller during WWII.  My mother loves to laugh and play.  My father loved to organize and work.  If ever they was an ant and cricket marriage this was one.  Somehow, I managed to blend both sets of genes and feel pretty lucky about it.   I can focus and see a job to  the end but I also know how to play.

MBA&M: WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO WRITE  Y A GOTHIC FICTION?

CAROLINE: I don’t consider Gothic Spring to be young adult fiction though the heroine is 16.  I never loved, laughed, or played harder than when I was 16.  I never felt as deeply betrayed by the universe as when I was 16.  An half developed mind, raging hormones and bodily changes create the perfect stage for  drama on a grand scale. Shkespeare undrestood this when he wrote Romeo and Juliet.

MBA&M: WHAT IF ANYTHING MADE YOU WANT TO WRITE GOTHIC SPRING?

CAROLINE: Gothic Spring is a journey into a mind that is unraveling.  The heroine, Victorine, is a young woman poised at the edge of sexual awakening and cursed with more talent and imagination than her Victorian society will tolerate.  The conflict between her desire and the restrictions that rule her life lead to dramatic circumstances.  I created this character and setting to explore how society and the attitudes of other women can deny a woman her freedom.  Having been active in the effort to pass the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) I saw first had how little freedom exists for women in our society, though we imagine it to be otherwise.

MBA&M: IF YOU COULD SWITCH PLACE WITH ANY CHARACTER IN GOTHIC SPRING WHO WOULD IT BE?

CAROLINE: Though some of my characters are admirable, they are too flawed to wish to be any of them.

MBA&M: DO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS AS A WRITER?

CAROLINE: I have no regrets about being a writer though I came into the field enormously ignorant.   Given today’s technology , anyone with ambition can publisher a book.  The biggest challenge, given the number of works being printed, is to sell yours.   Having to hawk a book  as if it were a commodity on the Chicago Stock Exchange and not art is a disappointment.  Still, if it must be done, it is better to wade in without complaint.

MBA&M: IF NOT WRITING WHAT WOULD BE YOUR CAREER CHOICE?

CAROLINE: I’d like to be Bill Gates, not for his money, but for his ability to bring hope to shattered people because of it.

MBA&M: TELL YOUR READERS WHERE TO FIND YOU AND WHERE GOTHIC SPRING IS AVAILABLE.

CAROLINE: I write a blog 5 days a week on writing and life.  I invite any readers to join me at:  carolinemillerwriteaway.com.

I am working on a new website.  You can find me at: www.booksbycarolinemiller.com

 if not now, soon.

Gothic Spring can be ordered at any book store.  ISNB # 978-0-9845424-9-9

Of course, I can always be  found on Amazon and Barnes & Noble in both the paperback and e-book versions

MBA&M: CAROLINE, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD TODAY?

CAROLINE: Yes, I want to thank you, April and Wendy,  for this  opportunity to reach new readers and to announce that my new book, Trompe l‘Oeil (to fool the eye) will be coming out in October of this year.  If readers like the works of the Brontes or Daphne du Maurier,  I urge them to give my books a try.

SPOTLIGHT ON: THICKER THAN WATER AUTHOR SHARON K. OWEN…

MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE SPOTLIGHT PRESENTATION….

AUTHOR,SHARON K.  OWEN

(From the author’s website)

I am a fiction writer, a university professor, a copy editor and an online writing teacher. My first Romantic Suspense: Thicker Than Water (Brands Crossing Series) was published in 2011 and the second book in the series, Whatever Goes Around, will be published in March, 2012.

My short stories and poetry have been published in Descant, Concho River Review, Iron Horse, American Literary Review, Trinity Writer’s Workshop newsletter and collections of Christmas stories.

I am blessed with a loving family, a multitude of friends and the good fortune to share a cozy sanctuary in North Texas with my four-legged roommates.

As an only child in a household and neighborhood primarily populated with adults, I followed my grandfather’s example and entertained myself by creating my own stories in which I was always the hero and the star.

I inherited my vivid imagination and a compulsion to create alternate realities from my maternal grandfather.

He was natural-born story teller. In another century he might have been a Seanchai (an irish storyteller/historian who related adventures that became part of the legends in Ireland.

In our family, he passed along an oral history that brought our ancestors to life.  These stories instilled in me a love of family drama and a curiosity about all the interactions of family members  through succeeding generations.

The literacy skills I developed in school give me the opportunity to put those stories on paper. Although the written version never quite matches the perfection of those images in my mind, I persist in the attempt to present characters and situations that intrigue, inspire and entertain.

There, her only battles are fought in Aidenne’s Revenge, Phillip’s online fantasy game based on her childhood adventures. With her grandfather’s sudden death from injuries he sustained in a suspicious car crash, Kate is forced to make a choice. Will she remain in Nashville to focus on Phillip and her music career? Or will she move back to Brands Crossing and honor the promise she made to her grandfather that she would investigate the mystery surrounding his death?

GIVEAWAY AND VISIT WITH AUTHOR JANE MYERS PERRINE….

FAITH WORDS,HACHETTE BOOK GROUP AND MY BOOK ADDICTION AND MORE PRESENTS…..

JANE MYERS PERRINE!!!

BIO:   Jane Myers Perrine has taught high school and college Spanish and worked as a program director in non-profit agencies as well as being chosen an outstanding citizen of Louisville for her volunteer work.    She writes stories with humor and deep emotion.

The Welcome Committee of Butternut Creek, the first book in Jane Myers Perrine’s Tales of Butternut Creek will be available April 3, 2012.  The hero of the series is a young minister called to serve a church in Butternut Creek, TX.   Jane, an ordained minister, has served several churches as well as following her minister husband from small towns to big cities.   Library Journal wrote:  “Perrine, an ordained minister, convincingly takes readers through the social and spiritual challenges that Jordan faces.”

WHAT DO I LOVE ABOUT A SMALL TOWN? BY JANE MEYERS PERRINE!!

We lived in Buchanan Dam, Texas, population nearly 1,700, for seven years.  Our subdivision, just east of the post office and west of the dam, consisted of five houses all snuggled together in a leafy paradise overlooking Lake Buchanan.  We had the greatest neighbors in the world.

One evening at nearly ten o’clock, George called me into his study and said, “I think I’m having a heart attack.”

Exactly what every wife wants to hear.  I called 9-1-1 and went out on the front porch to wait for the ambulance.   By the time EMS arrived, our neighbors had gathered to help.  One of our neighbors was a nurse with terminal cancer.  She was there immediately, to make sure we were okay, to help in any way she could.  She stood by as George was loaded into the ambulance.  Fortunately, he was fine, but her presence calmed me.

When our young neighbors who lived down on the lake shore sold chickens for their Four-H project, everyone bought a couple.    When one neighbor needed a safe haven for her dogs, we opened our fenced-in yard to her.   Any time anyone needed anything, all of our neighbors pitched in.

By the time Suzanne died, we’d moved to Austin but we came back for her funeral to sit with our neighbors.

I used these memories to create the warmth of Butternut Creek.   No research needed because I had learned about community by living in a loving neighborhood.

That’s why I believe novels about small towns are popular with readers.  Most of us live in cities and may not even know our neighbors while everyone in a small town knows your business.  That’s both a positive and a negative because less privacy equals more caring and help.   Although we don’t want to give up our computers and cells, we long to return to a simpler, kinder place.  That’s what I write about in Butternut Creek.
