“A half share of her dowry. Fifty-thousand,” George announced.

Everett snapped around to look at his brother fully. Fifty-thousand pounds would pay the debts and current debts of the farmers and leave enough money to support the estate for a couple of years, until it could pay its own way. “Go on.”

George smirked. “The gossip is she’s from trade, thinks herself some sort of independent woman, and is offering a marriage in name only. Wants to live on the continent, apparently.”

“A marriage of convenience? Very expedient.”

Then she reappeared, gliding right past him. She was resplendent in a dress the color of sunshine, her head tilted back as she waltzed, showing the curve of her neck and the angle of her jaw. Her dark hair gleamed, complemented by the brightness of her dress, as she danced like she was the only person in the room who mattered. Her jaw line was too strong for conventional beauty, but something about the way she held herself was mesmerizing. She was like a cat walking along uneven ground, not perfect, but compelling.

“Exactly.” George had the tone of a vindicated brother. “Miss Alnott is pretty, too. Just over there.”

Reluctant to look away from the dancers, Everett glanced to see whom George indicated. Sensation shot down his spine.

“The lady in the primrose-yellow dress,” George said.

He couldn’t take his gaze from her. Miss Alnott. “I see her.”

“I told you I’d find you a wife.” George turned away. “I’ll be in the card room.”

Oh no. “George—”

“Yes, yes,” he interrupted. “I’m not Peter. I’m not going to gamble everything away.”

George wandered off and Everett gave himself up to watching Miss Alnott moving around the room slowly as she and her partner traversed the floor. She was gathering attention. There were several sharks circling, their fine wool black coats gleaming. The matrons were talking about her, lips pursed with disapproval. Her pronouncement must be the reason for the hum of life in the room.

A fast step in the waltz made the wide skirts of her dress shine. It was a gold dress, really. An unsubtle ploy to give a man the impression she was financially desirable. She certainly looked the part of an aspiring aristocrat, smiling fixedly at the room.

This was the first cut of interest he’d felt since he’d begun his fortune hunting. It would be something to have such a lady for a wife: so beautiful and confident. Of course, if she wanted to live abroad, she wouldn’t be a true wife. But what did it matter? She would be like a wild cat living on the fringes of his estate, untamed and free, but technically his. Wary, coat gleaming, dangerous. If he found a wild cat, he would entice it with cream and take care of it, like he did with everything that was his.

“I suppose you think me selfish to not want to marry a man I neither love nor respect.” Her mouth was tight. “But I refuse to martyr myself by marrying Lord Rayner, when the result would be a totally powerless state after the marriage.”

Ah. Just a vague fear of a bad marriage. It seemed rather superficial to want love more than wanting to stay with family, but hadn’t he been cautious about marrying the wrong person? And as a man, all he had to be concerned about was a lack of conjugal bliss, not actual bodily harm. He was the owner, not the property.

“I can understand wanting love in your marriage.” He let his tone dip as he said the words and was gratified to see an answering visceral reaction in Grace. She flushed. This was where he would link the attraction between them with something more. “You know, love can grow in surprising places.”

Her neck stiffened and she sauntered away, looking deliberately around the room. Everett found he was anticipating her response.

“There are some leaks in this place, I concede. And there are holes in the curtains that let in light. Perhaps there are the prerequisites to grow something in this house.” She swung around to stare down at him. “But Everett, love is not a weed.”

“No, it’s a wildflower.”

Taming a Rake into a Lord (Taming the Heart, #4)

Christopher Masters is a first class rake. Having retired as a spy, he thinks he may spend the next year or two gambling and drinking as a way to forget the horrors of his past. Quite suddenly, he is thrown into a new role entirely when he inherits the title and properties of the Earl of Winthrop. Lady Elizabeth knows that her future is uncertain. But when a handsome new earl arrives and announces that the will requires her to marry within the year, all hope is lost. Having cared for her father these past months, she is less than a wallflower. At least those ladies attended the ball. But if she doesn’t marry, a new Earl might take Chris’ place, Bernard Sinclair. She can’t explain it, but his attention frightens her more than she can express.

As Chris attempts to help Lizzie find a suitable husband, his attraction for her cannot be denied. Will his past cripple his future or can Lizzie tame the rake into a lord?

MY THOUGHTS:

Taming a Rake into a Lord (Taming the Heart, #4)

Taming A Rake Into A Lord by Tammy Andresen is a quick, and exciting Victorian read. While, Book 4 in “Taming the Heart” series, but can be read as a stand alone.

Christopher Masters, rake, retired spy, and newly Earl of Winthrop. Lady Elizabeth, when the new Earl arrives, she learns she must marry within a year or lose her inheritance, as well, as a new earl will replace, Chris. There is a young ward, a child, Elizabeth and her father has been taking care of, what will be her faith, if Elizabeth marries.  Chris decides he must find Elizabeth. Then he learns,  Bernard Sinclair, her despicable distant cousin, has been trying to persuade her to marry him. There is something about Bernard that makes Lizzie’s skin crawl. Bernard will stop at nothing to have Lizzie and her inheritance.

Fast paced, quick read, approximately 165 pages, but very entertaining, with engaging and well-developed characters. The plot was intriguing with elements of mystery, drama, action, a bit of suspense, lots of romance and hot sexy passion. Oh, and a bit of humor weaved throughout the story.  I truly enjoyed Chris and Lizzie’s story. A refreshing tale of Victorian Romance with twist and turns!

Ms. Andresen is a talented author. One that draws the reader into her story and hold them in  awe. I read this in one reading, couldn’t stop until I reached the last page. Well worth the time to read! Perfect for a lazy afternoon! I can’t wait to read more of Tammy Andersen and her delicious stories. Highly recommended! Fans of Victorian Romance, Historical Romance, great characters, the antics of young children, passion and the love of family and a HEA, will definitely enjoy, “Taming a Rake into a Lord”. Well done, Ms. Andresen!

FIVE WAYS TO IMPRESS A MARQUESS~HOW TO IMPRESS A MARQUESS~SUSANNA IVES~ with #Giveaway and #Review

cvr-how-to-impress-a-marquess

Five Ways To Impress A Marquess

I didn’t title my book. I just called it “book” or “that &*%$! book” during its writing. My publisher came up with the catchy “How To Impress a Marquess.” However, for the first third of the book, my heroine, Lilith Dahlgren, couldn’t care less about impressing George, Marquess of Marylewick, and told him as much on numerous occasions. Hmmm, so maybe that should be my first “way” to impress the marquess.

  • Have a healthy disregard for the marquess’ opinion. After all, Lilith is a strong woman who knows her own mind. She doesn’t need some starchy marquess telling her what to do, how to behave, and what to think. The only reason she must interact with him is because he’s her trustee and keeps a tight handle on her purse strings.
  • Make the marquess a villainous sultan in your work of fiction. It is possible that Lilith was been attracted to the marquess all along. Why else would she have created such a sexy villain in her popular serialized story, which she published under a pen name? Even better, make a fictional heroine who is your alter ego. Through her fictional heroine Collette, Lilith puts into print all the tender parts of herself that she can’t show to George. Have your marquess fall in love with your fictional alter ego but never let him know that he is the villain. Warning: this is a very dangerous course and could later blow up in your face.
  • Wear tight clothes and flowing robes to entice him. This actually could be considered a subpoint of point two. Writing a story requires Lilith to sit for long periods of time and eat loads of toffee to fuel her creative brain. This really wreaks havoc on that famed Victorian waistline. Poor Lilith is popping her stays to fit in her clothes, so she usually flounces about the house in comfortable robes or shifts.
  • Dig into a painful secret from the marquess’ boyhood to reveal his true sensitive heart beating beneath the fusty exterior. For example, discover that he was once a talented artist who quit painting after numerous spankings ordered from his disapproving father. Force the marquess to face his old secrets and personal demons. Lilith finds George’s hidden boyhood art and tricks him into looking at it again. Of course, digging into a marquess’ past might not impress but anger him, so proceed with caution.
  • Love the marquess, not for his title, wealth, estates, or societal position. Love him with all your being for his kind heart and beautiful spirit. This is the most impressive point of them all.

MY THOUGHTS:

HOW TO IMPRESS A MARQUESS by Susanna Ives was an unexpected Victorian read. Book 3 of the “Wicked Little Secrets”, while can be read as a stand alone, I’d suggest reading this series in order, although, it’s not necessary to enjoy “How To Impress a Marquess”.

George, Marquess of Marylewick, is likable, honor bound to his duty and his family, has a kind heart. Lilith Dahlgren, is 23, immature, and the ward of George. George was a very patient hero, not a rake to me, at all. However, Lilith is spoiled, immature and headed for disaster around every turn. What a trial she is for George! I found  this story a bit slow in parts, I think the long paragraphs  prevents the reader from enjoying the story as much as they could. Otherwise, the story would have been more exciting.

I have issues with a ward’s guardian falling in love with his young ward, but that’s just my issue. I would have enjoyed this story more of Lilith was a bit older, more mature, and not as troublesome for George. However, toward the end of the book Lilith does redeem herself. She brings out the creative side of George.

Readers will found a bit of humor, a few giggles, an intriguing hero and the redemption of Lilith.

I have read several of Ms. Ives’ stories and enjoyed them very much, however, “How to Impress a Marquess” was not my favorite. Overall, an enjoyable read.

I received a complimentary copy.

Blurb For Miranda’s Dilemma

Erotic Historical Romance ~

Courtesan/Non-virginal Heroine

Poised to become Mayfair’s most

expensive and exclusive courtesan, Miss Miranda Jones finds her

rise inexplicably blocked by a socially

powerful nobleman. Scorned by her ducal father and determined to

attain everything that life has denied her due to an accident of birth,

she’s not about to let this arrogant earl stop her.

Adrian Sutherland, the Earl of Danvers,

saw his father destroyed by a heartless, predatory courtesan. He has no time or patience

for such exotic, expensive ladybirds. He’s far too busy

restoring his family’s wealth and reputation whilst doing what he can to

protect his friends from the clutches of all the scheming courtesans

of London.

Then a moment of compassion turns

intense dislike to breathless passion, and

these two strong-willed, fiercely proud

people are compelled to

indulge in a brief affair. Each is

convinced that they can satisfy

their craving for the other without

emotional risk.

But neither realizes that a little

dalliance can be a dangerous thing.

Reader Advisory: This is an erotic

historical romance and it

contains frank, frequent love scenes,

sexual slang and descriptions

and general bedchamber naughtiness. The

characters discuss abuse

issues from their backstories during

the course of their developing

relationship.

Blurb for A Most Demanding Mistress:

Miss Miranda Jones is indisputably the

most beautiful, elegant and sought after courtesan in all of London.

She hides a past full of pain and rejection beneath an exterior of

pride. She knows that noblemen put

their own fickle interests first

and cannot be trusted. Scorned by ducal

father, she never needed or

expected anything from a man, except

his financial support. Luxurious

living makes a soothing balm against

the sting of the ultimate rejection.

Now she’s madly in love with a

nobleman who cannot

afford to keep her in such extravagant

style. And she wonders if a

courtesan can ever afford to indulge

her own passions? Can she really

gamble so capriciously on her own

future and put the happiness of the

moment above future security? Will her

gentleman prove himself no

better than any other nobleman that she

has known?

Adrian Sutherland, the Earl of Danvers,

has seen the men of his family

destroyed through their obsessive need

to possess beautiful women.

He’d always thought himself immune to

such unworthy drives. Now he’s

fallen under the spell of Miss Miranda

Jones.

Miss Jones’ high standards and past

reputation foretells that she’ll be a most

demanding mistress. Despite his

relative lack of funds, Adrian is

determined to work hard to protect and

provide for her. Passion led

this skeptical gentleman to declare

himself in love. Yet as they

enter a protector and mistress

relationship, Adrian finds himself

consumed with possessiveness. And he

can’t help but wonder if is it

true love that motivates him? Or is it

the need to own her stunning

beauty? He must find the answer before

their tempestuous romance

breaks both of their hearts.

A Most Demanding Mistress is part of

the Fashionably Impure Series and is best read after Miranda’s

Dilemma.

Reader advisory: This story contains

frank sexual language and general bedchamber naughtiness. Abuse

issues are alluded to in the backstory.
