WE ARE SO EXCITED TO HAVE WITH US TODAY….
~AGAINST THE ROPES~
MBA&M: Please tell our readers a little about yourself?
SARAH: I’m a recovering lawyer, mom of three little munchkins, Pringles addict, voracious reader and karate practitioner. I write romantic suspense and contemporary erotic romance and sometimes I dabble in werewolves.
MBA&M: What is the allure of Contemporary Romantic tales to readers today, do you think?
SARAH: Definitely that little touch of reality and a setting to which readers can relate. Although fantasy, Contemporary Romances give an insight into the real world and how people deal with the issues in their lives. The stories resonate with real life people and places and the situations are ones you can imagine finding yourself in one day. Like the day I found myself in an MMA gym…(see below!)
MBA&M: Why tattoos, a tormented alpha hero, who love Martial Arts, and is named Torment?
SARAH: Who doesn’t love an alpha hero? I’m a big alpha hero fan and I knew my main character had to have all the alpha traits. I am also a martial arts practitioners, and after spending some time in an MMA gym, I thought martial arts would be a fitting choice for my alpha male.
Many of the MMA fighters I met while doing research had tattoos and I wanted Torment to have something that reflected his inner turmoil so the tattoos met both those needs.
Of course, alpha males need a bit of humbling so I gave Torment a tragic past and a driver for his dominant side (I’m so mean!). And of course, his name came out of the torment I inflicted on him!
MBA&M: What was your inspiration behind writing “Against the Ropes?”
SARAH: I got my inspiration for the book when I got lost driving one night and stopped at an MMA gym for directions. The fighters were falling over themselves to help me and after they had given me directions, they very graciously took me around the gym and explained the equipment and the type of training they did. I was really impressed with the level of fitness and athleticism the fighters had to have to be successful in the ring and that translated into some impressive looking fighters and a great idea for a story.
MBA&M: What was your most difficult scene to write and why?
SARAH: The most difficult scene to write was where Makayla has been abducted and is physically and emotionally vulnerable. Torment is so overcome with emotion and the fact he almost lost her, he isn’t able to give her the support she needs and she misreads his intentions. I thought people may be uncomfortable with the scene but it really is about how much he loves her and how overwhelming those feelings can be.
MBA&M: What was the challenge in writing “Against the Ropes” and where did you find your research to write this title?
SARAH: My biggest challenge is always finding the time to write. With three little kids, that time isn’t easy to come by! By way of research, I visited some MMA gyms (no hardship there!) and interviewed some fighters. I also watched a lot of live-streamed MMA fights to get an idea of the level of the violence and to choreograph some of the fight scenes. I did a lot of research into debt collection in California and, although they seem far-fetched, the circumstances Makayla finds herself in are quite real. I also had to research fight clubs (and yes, there is a real fight club where they hit each other over the head with keyboards!)
MBA&M: Please tell us a little about some of the secondary characters in “Against the Ropes”, after all they help carry the story.
SARAH: Amanda is a lawyer and Makayla’s best friend. She is liberal in her attitudes to men and sex and has no shortage of admirers. However, no one has ever touched her like Jake, Torment’s manager and a fighter at Redemption. Amanda’s insecurities drive them apart and he breaks up with her. Luckily, they get together again in the second book in the series, In Your Corner, but I don’t make it easy.
MBA&M: What is your next project?
SARAH: Right now, I’m working on the third book in the series and still trying to think up some exciting new fighter names. I’m also just finishing up a novella that will be released in November and will appear in an anthology, Unraveled, with the fresh new works of seven amazing authors!
MBA&M: Who would you say is your hero in real life?
SARAH: My real life hero is my Dad (awwww!). He’s always there for me and always has the best advice, no matter how old I am.
MBA&M: If you could go to dinner with anyone in the world, real or fiction, who would it be, and where would you go?
SARAH: I’d like to have dinner with Patrick Stewart. I think he’s an amazing actor, a true humanitarian, and he’s got an incredibly quirky sense of humor. Plus, I love that accent. And where would we go? It would have to be the Starship Enterprise!
MBA&M: Please tell our readers where to find you and where they may purchase “Against the Ropes.”
SARAH: I love to hear from readers so please feel free to get in touch!

He scared me. He thrilled me. And after one touch, all I could think about was getting more…
Makayla never thought she’d set foot in an elite mixed martial arts club. But if anyone needs a medic on hand, it’s these guys. Then again, at her first sight of the club’s owner, she’s the one feeling breathless.
The man they call Torment is all sleek muscle and restrained power. Whether it’s in the ring or in the bedroom, he knows exactly when a soft touch is required and when to launch a full-on assault. He always knows just how far he can push. And he’s about to tempt Makayla in ways she never imagined…
EXCERPT **May contain some mature content**
Run. I should run. But all I can do is stare.
His fight shorts are slung deliciously low on his narrow hips, hugging his powerful thighs. Hard, thick muscles ripple across the broad expanse of his chest, tapering down to a taut, corrugated abdomen. But most striking are the tattoos covering over half of his upper body—a hypnotizing cocktail of curving, flowing tribal designs that just beg to be touched.
He stops only a foot away and I crane my neck up to look at his face.
God is he gorgeous.
His high cheekbones are sharply cut, his jaw square, and his eyes dark brown and flecked with gold. His aquiline nose is slightly off-center, as if it had been broken and not properly reset, but instead of detracting from his breathtaking good looks, it gives him a dangerous appeal. His hair is hidden beneath a black bandana, but a few tawny, brown tufts have escaped from the edges and curl down past the base of his neck.
A smile ghosts his full lips as he studies me. A lithe and powerful animal assessing its prey.
My finely tuned instinct of self-preservation forces me back against the ropes and away from his intoxicating scent of soap and leather and the faintest kiss of the ocean.
“Excuse me…Torment. I…thought you forgot to buy a ticket, but…um…I don’t think you really need one. Do you?”
“A ticket?” His low-pitched, husky, sensual voice could seduce a saint. Or a young college grad trying to supplement her meager salary by selling tickets at a fight club.
My heart thunders in my chest and I lick my lips. His eyes lock on my mouth, and my tongue freezes mid-stroke before beating a hasty retreat behind my Pink Innocence glossed lips.
He steps forward and I press myself harder against the springy ropes, wincing as they bite into my skin through my thin T-shirt.
“Are you Amanda?”
With herculean effort, I manage to pry my tongue off the roof of my mouth. “I’m the best friend.”
He lifts an eyebrow. “Does the best friend have a name?”
“Doesn’t suit you. Do you have a different name?”
“What do you mean a different name? That’s my name. Well, it’s my nickname. But that’s what people call me. I’m not going to choose another name just because you don’t like it.” My hands find my hips, and I give him my second-best scowl—my best scowl being reserved for less handsome irritating men.
His gaze drifts down to the bright white “F**K Me” lettering now stretched tight across my overly generous breasts. With my every breath, the letters expand and retract like a flashing neon sign. I hate my sister.
He leans so close I can see every contour of bone and sinew in his chest and the more intricate patterns in his tribal tattoos. The flexible ropes accommodate my last retreat, and I brace myself, trembling, against them.
“What’s your real name?” he rumbles.
“Makayla.” Oh, betraying lips.
He smiles and his eyes crinkle at the corners. “Makayla is a beautiful name. I’ll call you Makayla.”
Heat roars through me like a tidal wave. He likes my name. “So…about that ticket—”
